Tomokazu Sato, PhD

Founder

Dr. Tomokazu Sato has decades of experience in biophysics and bioengineering, in the fields of animal electrophysiology, optophysiology, and ultrasound techniques. His strong quantitative background allows careful design and analysis of experiments critical to uncovering the mechanisms behind how ultrasound can alter neural activity. His expertise includes development of new technological platforms, novel applications of techniques, and development of intellectual property.

Dr. Sato holds 12 patents with over 500 citations, academic publications with over 1500 citations, including 2 seminal papers in ultrasonic neuromodulation with over 1000 combined citations. Dr. Sato’s academic background includes an AB in Physics (Harvard), PhD in Biophysics (Harvard), and postdoc training in bioengineering and neuroscience (Caltech). He was the first employee and senior scientist in Synsonix LLC and Neurotrek Inc. (later Thync Inc.), two of the earliest startups in the field of transcranial ultrasound for neuromodulation. Armed with the current additional knowledge from basic research, including several seminal papers, Dr. Sato hopes to continue developing this highly promising technology to treat mental illnesses, mood disorders, and other conditions plaguing the human brain.
